KahootIt!, or Kahoot! (https://getkahoot.com), is another free online tool, although not an app*, that can be used with your ELLs using the ipads to survey, supply an exit ticket, test review, or provide a pre/post assessment of student learning.
I frequently use it as a formative assessment without my students realizing it! Teachers launch their Kahoots on the tv screen, SmartBoard, or whiteboard (using a projector) in the front of the classroom for their students to view. Students are given the website and a game pin to enter, and then enter their names with their individual ipads. The students use the corresponding colors to answer the questions. For classrooms that don’t have enough ipads for each student, students can be instructed to work in teams of 3 or 4 with an ipad. Each team can create their team name and compete as a group with the other teams. This forces students to collaborate when selecting their answers since they must all agree and justify their reasoning prior to selecting an answer. Within each team, students can be required to pass the ipad to the next person who selects the answer to ensure that every student gets to push the button.
Over the last two years, I have found that Kahoot. It! increases student engagement and motivation. My ELL students view Kahoot. It! as a game and not as a learning tool. My students are always excited at the end of a unit of study when they get to demonstrate what they’ve learned using the Kahoot! website. One of the best aspects of this online tool for me is that I am able to receive an overview of the current knowledge levels of my students, and can adapt my teaching accordingly. Kahoot. It! summarizes student progress by question, and saves the data in the Cloud. I can access this data at any time to inform and modify my instruction based on student strengths and areas of difficulty. Teachers are also able to access numerous pre-created Kahoots (i.e. quizzes) on a variety of topics, content areas, and skills, if they would prefer not to create their own.
Not only do I love how engaged and excited my students become when playing Kahoot. It!, but also how easy it is to create quizzes and how interactive the review games can be!
So give, Kahoot! a try.
Create, play, and share fun learning games for any subject,
