Below are a few tips for working in the free version:
This is the"free" version screen. This is the "paid" version screen.
With the free version, you can only create one custom prompt at a time, and only one student can write a story on the app at a time.
Steps for the free version:
Students can choose a prompt through "search", "categories", or "random".
Students (or teacher) can write their own prompt in "create a prompt".
Or... Students can write in "Quick Write" without a prompt.
The photo above left shows the screen in "search", "categories", or "random" after the student has tapped on the pencil icon to write.
1. Type the title.
2. Type an answer to the prompt or type a report or story, etc.
3. Students read their writing aloud and record their voices by tapping the "record audio" button then the "record" button on the next screen.
After recording, students can:
-
tap "play" to hear their recording
-
tap "continue recording" to record more
-
tap "record new" to start over
-
tap "save audio" to save the recording
4. Tap "save to gallery" (and "yes" on the pop-up) to save the work. This will take students to a screen to add an author profile. Tap "add profile".
5. Add profile:
-
picture: take a new photo or add a photo from the camera roll
-
type student's name
-
email: not necessary (or type teacher's email address)
-
tap "save" ... This profile will show up under the photo on the writing page as the author.
6. The student's completed Write About will appear. To save it:
-
tap "send to camera roll" to save a photo image of the completed writing
-
tap "video to camera roll" to save with the audio recording.
7. Optional: tap "share by email" to send as an image, a video, or a PDf.
(You can , also, share the image & video from your camera roll by email or air drop.)
8. Check the camera roll to be sure the image or video is really saved there.
9. Delete this Write About before the next student begins a new one.
10. Delete the student's profile so the next student will be able to create his own profile.
NOTE: Deleting a student's Write About & profile each time may seem like too much extra work, but really only takes a minute to do, and then Write About This is ready for the next student to begin.
All the work can be saved in the camera roll so you won't have lost anything when you delete each one from the app itself.

TIP: For younger students, to save time, the teacher may want to do some of the typing himself/herself. Have students write their first draft on paper; then go through the writing process--revise & edit-- before writing a final draft. The student can begin typing the final draft, and the teacher can finish up if the piece is long and time is short. or...
If a student is doing all his/her own typing and is not finished before the writing time is up, the Write About can be saved to finish another day. (tap "save to gallery") When the student is ready to finish the Write About, tap on "My Write Abouts" from the home screen. On the next screen, tap on the pencil icon in the upper left corner of the thumbnail image and continue working.
TIP: In the free version, only 1 profile and 1 Write About at a time can be created.
To DELETE a student's profile...from the home screen, tap on the "person" icon in the lower right corner. (See photo on right, icon circled in red.)
The "Profiles" page will come up. Tap the trash can on the right corner of the profile photo and then tap "yes" to delete the profile.
To DELETE a Write About, tap on the Write About to open it. Tap on the trash can in the upper right corner of the page. Tap "yes" to remove this Write About from the gallery.
*BE SURE YOU DO THIS BEFORE THE NEXT STUDENT BEGINS WRITING. If the 2nd student writes & tries to save before the 1st student's writing has been deleted, the 2nd student will not be able to add his profile or save his work (except by a screen shot).
TIP: To share the Write About with parents and a broader audience, upload the video to your Youtube Channel from the
camera roll. (*Make sure you have a photo/video release form for the student before uploading to YouTube if the
Write About includes a photo of the student in the author profile.)
